I’m an American citizen: can I benefit from the French social security system?
An agreement was signed between France and the USA on the 2nd March 1987 specifying that US citizens living in France are subject solely to US legislation. Namely, they remain covered by US social security for a period of either two or five years.
This period lasts for five years if you are undertaking paid employment, and for two years if you are self-employed.
After this period US citizens are covered by French social security provided that they pay the contributions.
In order to be exempt from paying social contributions in France you must obtain a certificate from the US administration that confirms you are covered by the US system (form SE 404-2).
