What is URSSAF?
Despite its efficiency, the French social security system can appear daunting to those who are inexperienced with it. In France, both employers and employees have to pay social contributions on their wages and the role of URSSAF within this system is to receive and manage these obligatory payments. The rate and amount of social security contributions can differ and has to be indicated on every monthly payslip. URSSAF stands for Unions de Recouvrement des Cotisations de Sécurité Sociale et d’Allocations Familiales, or Organisations for the Collection of Social Security and Family Benefit Contributions. It is a body of private organisations which work to collect and fairly redistribute social payments, enabling French workers to have access to the social protection they deserve. Some of the benefits financed by URSSAF include medical care, sick leave and maternity leave allowances, as well as pensions and family support. In 2020, URSSAF collected 528.3 billion Euros which was used to finance social benefits for individuals of all ages in France through over 880 organisations.
